Fragmented
Relationships are frequently perceived through a simplistic, binary lens that dichotomizes them as either right or wrong, good or evil. However, such a perspective oversimplifies the complex nature of relationships, which can be among the most arduous experiences to navigate. Drawing on his memories and the symbolic meanings they hold, Drew created digital photographs of objects that represent significant moments from lost relationships. While making these pictures, Drew reexperienced repressed emotions further unlocking memories and experiences he had forgotten. Using a binary image converter, these photographs are transformed from multicolor photographs to a two-color binary image. Then, Drew imports the images into a computer text editing program which displays the raw code of the image. This reveals long strings of machine learning code that are hidden within the image and indecipherable to the human eye. Drew manipulates the code of the image by adding and deleting text. Drew inserted details of significant stories and words left unsaid– unlocked emotions. Reexperiencing his thoughts from the events brought acceptance and closure to the grief and loss of these relationships, while still acknowledging the difficulty of letting go of the people who have played significant roles in one’s life. Drew’s manipulations resulted in fragmentation and chromatic shifts in the images as they responded to the modified code. Through this process, Drew’s layered and complicated process mimics the complexity of relationships. By acknowledging the multi-faceted nature of relationships, Drew’s work invites viewers to reflect on their own experiences and embrace the beauty and complexity of the relationships that shape their lives.
